DVD Review – Belly Dance East Coast Tribal

DVD Review – Belly Dance East Coast Tribal

Ok, I will admit it. With my own taste in Belly Dance running toward Egyptian, Bollywood, Turkish, and Flamenco Fusion – basically, everything other than tribal – I slid this DVD into my player with, lets just say, some trepidation.

Well, for anyone out there who feels the same way I do, or who finds the tattoos and excess of black a little confronting, please overcome it! Likewise, anyone who does not necessarily like music by Freek Factory (actually a collective of various artists), bypass your bias! Give this DVD a chance, and there is a concomitant chance that your technique will show improvement.

Sera, the performer and instructor on this DVD is a beautiful and technically excellent dancer. The menu contains sections which include Warm up & Isolations, Hip work Drills, Combinations Step by Step, Practice and a Performance by Sera. The performance is lovely, although, as I said before, not my kind of dance. Had I not been watching to review this DVD, I probably wouldn’t have gone any further. Thankfully for me, I next switched to the Warm up & Isolations and Hip work Drills sections. Wonderful! Sera clearly explains muscle group use, weight shifts, and energy flows for each movement and really works you out. I was suddenly more interested. I got up and played it again. She had my attention.

The Combinations Step by Step is, again, very in-depth for technique, right down to hands. Again, I got up and played it over. The combinations are separated at the menu level into six sections, which would be very useful if you were trying to learn the choreography to perform. It would also be good for those of us with less endurance, as it totals 45 minutes and requires quite a bit of energy.

There are menu selections telling you about Sera, Freek Factory and the Solstice Dance ensemble. It would be nice to be given some information about where to source the music used in the DVD, as this is not currently included.

Overall, I must say I was happy to be pleasantly surprised by Belly Dance East Coast Tribal. I enjoyed the expertise of Sera and the DVD was easy to use and well thought out.
